Welcome to Betty Sue!

Betty Sue is a shop for all music lovers! Whether you love to listen to it, play it on an instrument, or teach it to the next generation, music is essential in our lives, and this shop is inspired by that love.

Here you’ll find hand-drawn music themed gifts, stationery, and art. Every Betty Sue product is designed and illustrated by me (Hi, I’m Liz!), and it’s all rooted in finding the intersection of beautiful art and a love for music.

But Betty Sue isn’t just a gift shop. It’s also home to hundreds of piano teaching resources created by my mom, Susan Paradis. More on that in a minute.

A Little About Me

I’m Liz, the artist and maker behind Betty Sue. By trade, I’m an artist. I’ve spent years working in movies and video games, and I taught digital arts at a university for 15 years. So when I say I love drawing and making things, I really mean it.

Running an online shop wasn’t originally part of my “life plan” but life has a way of surprising you. When my mother asked me to take over her online business, I saw an opportunity to achieve my own dreams while preserving her legacy. I took over in 2024 and slowly started to make her website business my own.

And if you are curious about the name Betty Sue: It comes from my real name, Elizabeth Susan. My middle name was named for my mother. I really am much more of a “Liz” but I think the name Betty Sue is so cute that I decided to name my business that. I love that it combines my mother and I together as a little tribute to her.

Why art + music? Well, my mother instilled a love for music in me from the moment I was born. And I recognize now how lucky I was to have her as my music mentor!

Susan Paradis Piano Teaching Resources

This part of the story is really my mom’s.

Susan Paradis was a children’s music teacher for most of her life. She started as a little girl teaching her friends to play duets and carry a tune, and she never really stopped. After earning her degree, she became a children’s piano teacher, and she loved it. But she noticed that some music concepts were tough for kids to grasp, and the available materials didn’t always meet them where they were.

So she went to graduate school to study how children learn music, and she started creating her own teaching materials. It was important to her that they were age-appropriate activities designed to engage kids and make them excited about their next lesson. Her philosophy was simple: there’s no “one way” to teach piano, and every child deserves a chance to learn.

In 2006, she launched SusanParadis.com as a blog for music educators, and it grew into something remarkable. She composed original works, designed printable games, worksheets, flash cards, and supplemental activities, all written to appeal to students and reinforce piano methods in a child-centered way. Her resources were used by teachers across the country and around the world.

My mom passed away in 2024 after a brave battle with cancer. But her work lives on here. The Susan Paradis brand remains a core part of Betty Sue, and her entire library of piano teaching resources is still available for the teachers and students who need them.

Susan ran this website for 17 years before passing it along to her daughter, Liz.

If you’re a piano teacher looking for supplemental materials that are engaging, thoughtfully designed, and kid-friendly, you’re in the right place. This was my mom’s life’s work, and I’m proud to keep it going with new materials!
